Christopher is the son of perhaps the greatest Valar of the 20th century, JRR Tolkien. JRR dreamed of the details of the Lord of the Rings throughout his lifetime, but died in 1973 before he had completely completed his task. Christopher then took over. He received dreams of the specific details of the Silmarillion, and published them in 1977. A few years later, he received critical dreams on the mapping of Middle Earth, and published updated maps.

He continued to receive dreams, later publishing Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle Earth. In 2007, dreams came together to produce The Children of Hurin.
